Sometimes, I just wonder why certain people go to great lengths in order to install Apple's Mac OS X operating system on all sorts of machines, other than Apple's own, of course. I mean, they will never ever manage to work as well as the native Apple hardware, not to mention the fact that this whole process is illegal.

Indeed, you might say that they do it for the thrill of the “hunt,” in order to prove to the world that it can be done, and, to some extent, you'd be kind of right, at least as far as a user going by the name Asama from the InsanelyMac forums is concerned, whose latest feat of ingenuity and determination was to install the aforementioned operating system onto one of the slimmest, most lightweight portable computing systems out there, namely Sony's Vaio X.

In fact, Asama's approach to the task was quite an interesting one. Apparently, he had previously concocted a special Mac OS X image that he ran on another Sony Vaio model, the famous P. So, thinking that the hardware within the Vaio X series wasn't that different from that in the P, he tried it out... and, surprise, surprise, it worked.

Of course, since we're talking about some pretty major modifications to the software, certain components were not supported, especially the Wi-Fi module. Plus, since most components of the Vaio X are embedded in the ultra-thin motherboard, replacing the respective module with a supported one was impossible.

As some of you will certainly remember, we had the chance to try out the Vaio X for ourselves, and found it to be one of the coolest portable computing systems we'd ever seen, at least in terms of form factor and design (albeit the level of performance ain't that bad, either). We also noticed that it ran Windows 7 fairly well, but we really have to wonder just how well it would “play along” with the Apple operating system.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
