I'm pretty sure that quite a lot of gamers out there have wished, at some point, that they were able to use the same controller for various gaming systems. For example, an Xbox 360 controller on a PS3, a SixAxis on the Wii, and so on. However, it would seem that at least one possibility has gone beyond the “wishful thinking” stage, as a very innovative software application might open the way for the PS3 controllers (both the SixAxis and the DualShock3) to be safely used for controlling PC games.
Hence, a few days ago, the webmaster of the
DCEmu forums posted online several software applications supposed to make the PS3 controller work on PCs, namely two drivers and two applications for tweaking various settings, including here the force-feedback. Apparently, they only work for the wired version for the time being.
According to the post mentioned above, the installation process is quite an easy one, since, after being connected, the PS3 controller will be “seen” by the host computer as a Human Interface Device (HID), users being able to then easily update the driver with the one provided by the Japanese coder.
Of course, this is not the first controller to work both on a gaming console and a PC, since Microsoft has already enabled this functionality for its Xbox controller. However, Sony failed to do so, which led to the appearance of such rogue applications.
Only practical tests will prove whether these software applications actually work or not, and, up until now, our tests have proved to be rather inconclusive, but it might have had something to do with the setup we've used. So, we'll try tinkering with them a little bit more and will surely come back with more info on the subject.
