You surely know the ASIMO
robot that Honda started developing in 1993, being one of the world's first robots with evolved locomotors. But you most likely didn't know that it has recently received a makeover, its case being remodeled into a bluish new one with a few improved features, all under the name of P4. The other models were P1, P2 and P3, seen in the second picture attached to this piece. The obvious improvement in design is obvious from a distance.
You should know that this new robot has a flexible waist, which means that the next time you will see it walking/dancing,
its moves will be much smoother. Also, its chest and shoulder areas have been redesigned. The ASIMO robot is now 5.3 tall (about the same height of the previous one), but weighs about half the P3 model. It lost 50 kg and now has the average weight of a human being.
With 34 degrees of freedom, this new ASIMO prototype will surely bring enthusiasts to the future events where it will be showcased. Perhaps at those events somebody can make a movie with the new ASIMO in action. I think we are all curious what the more flexible waist can do to the walking style and especially to the dancing skills of this
advanced robot. In other news, this world-famous robot will be celebrating 10 years in October and a third edition is expected to be launched by Honda. Perhaps until then, we will come across some more info regarding this more flexible ASIMO, as we cannot wait until October to see it in action. According to
Yahoo! News Japan, this is just a prototype, not a new model of ASIMO, just to make sure there are no confusions.
