How to Solve HTC Hero Sync Problem in Windows 7

Workaround for HTC Hero sync problem in Windows 7
Enlarge picture
As some of you probably know by now, HTC has been making some pretty spectacular pushes on the smartphone segment over the past couple of years, one of the company's latest masterpieces, announced only a short while ago, being the Hero model, which packs some of the most coveted features in the modern mobile world, including here Google's famous mobile-targeted operating system, the Android.

Now, since this is a next-generation handheld, most of us would expect it to be able to work quite well with all the next-generation operating systems out there, the most outstanding such issue being the fact that people who are already running Windows 7 (either the 64-bit or the 32-bit version of the Microsoft OS) are having some serious trouble sync-ing their Hero to their computer. Well, perhaps not all of them, but it seems to be a common enough problem in order to be worth providing an alternate sync guide, should you be forced to go through this kind of experience.

However, it would seem that Simon Britton from The Asylum might have found a very interesting and useful workaround for this issue. Given the fact that we were hard pressed to sync our brand new HTC Hero to our Windows 7 machine, we tested the workaround for ourselves and saw that it actually worked in real life, and decided to share it with you.

So, this is what you should do in order to get your HTC Hero all sync-ed on your computer running Windows 7:

First and foremost, you'll have to download the latest specialized sync tool from HTC, namely HTC Sync 2.04, right here, on Softpedia, and then install it on your computer. However, that won't do you much good simply because, after running the software, your computer won't immediately recognize the HTC Hero.

The way to go is to manually update the HTC drivers from Windows 7, using the Windows Vista drivers. There are two ways you can accomplish this, either by installing the HTC Sync software on a machine running Windows Vista and then copying them from there, or simply getting them right here on Softpedia, in .zip format (both Windows 7 64-bit drivers and Windows 7 32-bit drivers).

As Mr. Britton informs us, after you've gotten the drivers, all that remains to be done is to place them in the right folder, namely either C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x64 (for the Windows 7 64-bit) or C:\Program Files (x86)\HTC\HTC Driver\Driver Files\Vista_x86 (for the Windows 7 32-bit). Then, you'll have to update the Driver from the “Devices and Printers” menu in Windows 7 (where the Android phone is shown).

After you're done with this step of the install process as well, we simply have to reboot your machine, just to be sure, and then Windows 7 should automatically recognize the HTC Hero.

Thanks for the mention, and link back. I'm glad this fix is working for everyone else experiencing this problem.
As I mentioned in my post comments, HTC have been informed about this, and explained that it is their installer at fault rather than the sync software itself. Hopefully they will fix it themselves to ensure a trouble free installation.
Cheers.
Simon.

And we thank you for coming up with this solution to the Sync issue, and really hope that HTC will do something about it in the near future.
Best,
Alex.

Didn't work for me... Windows 7 RTM does not accept to install the vista drivers

There is now a new version of HTC Sync for the HTC Hero although it isnt on their website. HTC gave me a link to it with a code specifically for the Windows 7 and it works perfectly. The version is 2.0.6.

Comment #9 by: SL on 08 Nov 2009, 20:02 GMT reply to this comment

Here is how I did it in Windows 7 64Bit with HTC sync 2.0.4.

0. Do NOT connect with USB cable your HTC hero or HTC Android phone just yet.

1. First download the HTC Sync 2.0.4 and the Vista 64 bit drivers as described above to your desktop.

2. Install the HTC Sync 2.0.4 and follow the instructions on the screen until it says HTC Sync installed successfully.

3. On your phone click menu button -> click Settings -> click Applications -> click Development -> select 'USB debugging'. And exit out to home screen.

4. Connect your phone with USB cable to your PC.

5. Cut and Paste the 'HTC Driver' folder from your desktop to c Drive in C:Program Files (x86)HTC folder.

6. On Windows 7 click Start, open Control Panel, open Devices and Printer, click on Device Manager link. This will open a new window titled Device Manager.

7. Locate 'ADB' device, right click properties to update the driver and point it to the folder location as described in step 5. Then Restart your PC, unhook the phone and reconnect the phone after the Windows 7 has restarted. THATS IT.

This was just the ticket I needed. I have been at this all day trying to install HTC Sync V2.0.18 (Release 1/13/2010) on my Windows 7 computer. No matter what I did, my phone wasn't recognized. This post did it for me. Just to recap: get the Vista drivers from softpedia, copy them from your download location, paste them in the HTC Drivers folder, delete the Win7 drivers and then perform an update drivers action as described here. The only difference for me was I had to tell windows that I had the manufacturers disk and browse to the HTC Vista drivers location. Bingo - I am GTG now! Thanks

I have the same problem like 'venkat' has on Windows XP.

Product: HTC Sync 2.0.8 -- Error 1722.There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor. Action CA_DriversInstall, location: C:DOKUME~1xxxxLOKALE~1TempMSI133.tmp, command: /S /v/passive /L1033

HTC Support does only provide "new" drivers. But this is not the solution...

Any other help?

Comment #11 by: Tai Davis on 22 Nov 2009, 20:20 GMT reply to this comment

I searched all over the internet for the answer to this problem. I went nuts looking at installing SDK, and all this other software. I just found that all I had to do is update the driver.

Since my Android phone was being recognized as a drive, all I had to do was go to device manager and update the driver (adbwinapi.dll file) along with the other drivers. I did it while my phone was plugged in and it works great! I'm using the latest version of HTC Sync for the Hero & Tattoo 2.0.8

Remember, this is for Windows 7!

THANKS!

I have had sync problems with my HTC HERO using Winxp Sp3.
The thing works after closing all the programs that HTC Sync uses.
These can be closed in the administrator of windows.(I have it inspanish so here is a link to an image (http://lecciones.batiburrillo.net/wp-content/uploads/2009/04/administrador_tareas.gif) )
Close all the apps that it has open.
After that restart HTC Sync and do the process as always.

Cheers,

Skyshield

Didn't work for me straightaway until I did the ADB thing mentioned by SL in comment 9. I didn't even need to reboot, HTC Sync fired up and Outlook 2007 synced up. (I'm using W7 64bit if that is of any help/interest!)

Hi Folks,

I have had the same problems today, HTC support told me that the new windows 7 update does not work with 32 bit versions of windows 7.
Installing older verions of windows sunc and copying driver files also does not work.
A workaround is to export all of your contacts and appointments into Google mail and google calender, use the google sync programme, then they should appear on your phone.
I'm not a techie and to be fair was tempted to have thrown my hero out of the window today but i'll wait and see.

All the best Dave

Comment #30 by: Kwaailappies on 25 Jan 2010, 10:18 GMT reply to this comment

I tried updating the driver but the machine tells me the most updated driver is already running and it doesn't update it.

how can I force the machine to use the vista drivers for my hero?

I even deleted the drivers in the win7 directory and replaced with the vista drivers but still no hero pickup via my machine.

Any ideas?

Well, the 2.0.18 update doesn't work with the 64 bit version of windows, either. This kind of support is a joke. I'll thick I'll switch back to Nokia smartphones. Nokias syncronisation support is ways better that what I've experienced with my HTC hero aka G2 Touch

Found that the steps outlined above actually work. I've spent nearly all day on this problem and it was a matter of semantics that I kept missing on.

1) Install HTC Hero as outlined.

2) Make sure your phone is set to USB debugging

3) Add the downloaded Vista drivers folder to the aforementioned location.

4) Go into the Device Manager (Start > Control Panel > Device Manager) and look for 'ADB Interface' or similar and expand that.

5) Right-click on the item under that and go to properties.

6) Click Update Driver and then "Browse my computer for driver software".

7) IMPORTANT STEP: Click the link, "Let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer"

8) Click "Have Disk" and Browse to the location where you put the HTC Driver folder and open the Vista 64x folder.

9) There are two INF files in there. Choose 'htcrndis.inf' and click Open.

10) Click Okay and the device shown will be "My HTC". Select that and click Next to install.

11) Close the driver properties.

You may have to click "Action" and select "Scan for hardware changes", but once the system recognizes that change, your HTC Sync will start up and run as normal.

Best of luck!

2.0.18 is not recognizing my phone at all. Win 7 64 bit. This trick doesn't do much good, it just says that the best driver is already installed.

Comment #35 by: Judy on 05 Feb 2010, 19:05 GMT reply to this comment

HTC Sync and Window 7, 32 bit.
I had the problem of HTC Sync not recognizing my phone.
This is how I resolved the problem.

First, I rolled back my computer to the point before I had connected my phone and installed HTC Sync for a frest start. (this removes any drivers windows has installed for your phone, for me it was only one day)

Next, I installed the latest version of HTC Sync and ran the executable. When you get to the final page that has the "Finish" button to click on, DO NOT CLICK IT YET. Just leave that page sitting on your desk top.

On your phone, make sure it is set to the USB debugging. Connect your phone to the computer with the USB and mount the phone . Windows will load the correct drivers from HTC, not the windows drivers.

When this is done, then click the FINISH button on the HTC Sync and when the program starts, it will recognize your phone. It may take a minute or two but it worked for me.

Hope this helps.
Judy

After you connect your phone to your PC, wait a while and you should see HTC Sync button appear in phone's notification area. Click it and watch the drivers installing.

This is ridiculous!! Can't believe anyone on this forum has to go to this much effort to make something work, that was sold to us as the latest and greatest.. Just don't have the time to spend all day to try to figure out a hack job to fix their problem. Be careful some of these options have caused a full reset on the phones which erases all history, texts, downloads, etc.!! We're better off emailing HTC to motivate them to fix THEIR problem the right way!

One thing that I have found early on in my use of the HTC Hero is that the sync does not work. The net is full of complaints. I have downloaded the upgrade without any successful resolution of this issue. Finally, I stumbled upon using Google sync and it works like a charm. Actually I find it much easier than any sync program I have used in the past. It is quick, easy, dependable and free! I use it with the Google calendar but I believe that it may be able to work with Outlook. I have not tried that.

this is the message i get every time

Comment #45.3 by: Kim on 21 May 2010, 02:58 GMT

The new version, 2.0.33, didn't solve my problem either. My problem is that my computer, running windows 7 64 bit, recognizes my hero but when it tries to sync it only recognizes outlook express (which isn't even on the machine). It won't recognize outlook 2007 to sync with it. HTC sync 2.04 is much older but I've heard talk of a 2.0.4 in beta testing. I think this might be confusion with the old version. Any thoughts? I've got sync to recognize outlook 2007 once after reinstalling 2007 but then it looks for express. ARGH! None of this was a problem with the firmware verion before 1.5. I've even downloaded the new firmware 2.1 and it still won't work.
HELP!

After trying this several times to no avail, as well as other tips to get this done I finally realized,....There will be no icon for your Android phone in which to manually update the drivers unless 7 ultimate has your sync manager installed without an error code. I then downloaded the drivers from Microsoft, extracted the Vista drivers and installed them manually as you stated above and then re-installed HTC Sync. I generated an error of "newer version already installed" but i continued anyway as I figured it would see the drivers I previously installed, and it worked, HTC Sync was installed but did not see my Android, so I kept the usb cable attached, re-booted the Android phone (HTC Hero) and ran the new software exe file and installed iin less than 5 min and I now have the absolute best version yet, I love this phone ands was going to the EVO but not now, lots of robust new features....Would love to answer in exact sequence how i did this as i did it to 2 HTC's today.....Wifeys and mine ....Thanks for the Links and the opportunity to comment.

There is already an HTC sync software version 2.0.2 in the SD card on the HERO htc phone's SD Slot, which when I installed and updated to the latest version it syncronized my HERO to my PC.The problem only comes when I give a command 'CALCULATE CODE'it asks for another different driver.Though had all the required drivers installed.SEEMS THERE IS A BIG BIG PROBLEM STILL.

Does not work......

Launching computer hardware that does not work seems to be a habit that the computer world never overcomes . Why is this? I thought google would be different but it seems they are just as greedy as everyone else . 2 Words The Phone works but not with windows 7. I am a advanced computer tech. and helping my friend with his miserable phone for 4 hours was like pulling my own teeth.

Thanks. This worked for me!! Windows 7 x64.
I agree with some comments. This is ridiculous. This trick of wait to catch de proper drivers in order to sync just calendar and contacts is very very old fashioned (windows 95 maybe) And I insist just for calendar and contacts.
What's the f**** problem Google has with the tasks folder?

Comment #55 by: karatedog on 19 Aug 2010, 15:41 GMT reply to this comment

This doesn't work for me.
When I tried to update the driver, I've got a message that the drivers are up-to-date.
Instead, I removed the ADB driver (be sure to check the checkbox to delete the drivers physically) then do a Refresh, so Win7 will look for new hardware.
It will find the HTC Hero, and tries to install driver for it. Then it will automagically find the Vista_x86 directory with the drivers, and install them.

Sounds like a lot of trouble. As long as your Hero is upgraded to at least 2.0, just download the new U.N. 3.0 sync program and you'll think that you'd died and gone to heaven.
The 3.0 is a complete new build that had been released in Britin and is out for approval here in the U.S.
It will work and make you happy but be sure to uninstall the older software befor you download.
