Miniaturization has brought about the appearance of some pretty strange devices, some of which were not even considered possible a few years back. And one of the best examples comes from Humminbird, a traditional manufacturer of various fishing and navigation accessories, which has just released its RF35 SmartCast Sonar/GPS Combo, a device that can help users find fish on the bottom of the sea, at the same time having a form factor closely resembling that of a wristwatch.
As the company informs us, the RF35 features Advanced Remote Sonar Sensor wireless technology and a compact, 1.25-inch STN LCD display (48 x 32 pixel resolution), packaged in a wrist mount design for a high level of portability. Moreover, as expected, it's completely waterproof, so you probably don't have to worry if it happens to get wet while you're scanning for fish.
The RF35 is a single-beam sonar, which emits on the 125 kHz frequency at 90 degrees and sports a level of sensitivity of -10db. Furthermore, its radius of action is in fact pretty impressive, since we're talking about a depth of around 120 feet, or 36 meters. The device also delivers temperature readings and sports a built-in backlighting system, for nighttime use.
Moreover, if you want to push forward the level of functionality provided by the RF35, then one very good solution is represented by the RF45 Advanced Remote Sonar Sensor, which delivers water surface temperature readings, longer in water use and programmable two-channel operation. The RF45 can easily communicate with the RF35, the maximum range being of around 75 feet (23 meters).
The RF35 SmartCast Sonar/GPS Combo retails for around 80 US dollars, but if you want to benefit from the advantages provided by the whole package, you'll probably have to cough up an additional 24 US dollars (the price tag of the RF45).
