If you've read the “Lord of the Rings” fantasy novels by J.R.R. Tolkien or (more likely) watched the movies based on the famous trilogy, you might remember Frodo's fight against Shelob, the giant spider, where the tiny hobbit used a vile of powerful light (a gift from the Elves) in order to drive the arachnid blind. Well, to some extent, that's exactly the type of product you'll read about as follows, although this one is real and readily available on the market.
The device in question is called the Illumiglow Grenade and is available at UK-based online retailer Heinnie. What we're dealing with here is a self-activating glow grenade that gives 360 degrees of ultra intense usable and safe illumination.
According to the vendor, this product was originally designed to assist troops in Afghanistan illuminate caves without giving away a position and have been used ever since for all sorts of special forces-related purposes. It provides 5 minutes of intense light, with all Illumiglow safety sticks being foiled wrapped for protection against both moisture and unwanted light access. The safety sticks emit no spark, heat or flame and are completely maintenance free, non-toxic, non-flammable, and waterproof.
Moreover, carrying this thing around is quite an easy task, since every Illumiglow Grenade measures just around 100mm (or 4 inches). Hence, you probably won't have any problems packing a bunch of things in your backpack when going visiting some caves, for example, or another type of low-lit environment.
Price-wise, the Illumiglow Grenade is not exactly very cheap, especially taking into account the fact that we're talking about a single-use device. Hence, the grenade can be yours for 7 pounds a pop (11 US dollars), so if you decide to stock up on these things, just be careful how you decide to use them.
