Although it promises super fast transfer speeds and a lot of other improvements, the USB 3.0 had to fight really hard in order to get where it is now, one of the main reasons being that Intel didn't provide support for this in their motherboard chipsets, but things are set to change since rumors state the blue giant is preparing to announce USB 3.0 support over at IDF 2010.
The Fall
Intel Developer Forum is set to take place between 13 and 15 September in San Franciso and the Chinese Commercial Times newspaper, cited by
DigiTimes, says this is when the company will announce the addition of a USB 3.0 controller into its future chipsets.
If this is true then USB 3.0 may finally become mainstream, present day implementations having to rely on third party chips provided by NEC, VIA and a few other companies adding to the total cost of production and design.
Since manufacturers have to use third party solutions, the decision to implement USB 3.0 is completely up to them, so many notebooks and motherboards ship without USB 3.0 support.
This is the main reason that led to the slow adoption rate of USB 3.0, although Asus and a few others have been really active in adding USB 3.0 support to their products.
SuperSpeed USB brings a huge increase in speed over USB 2.0 since the new standard supports 4Gbit/s transfer speeds, a lot more then the 480Mbit/s achieved by its present day, USB 2.0, counterpart.
Even though the speed increase is tremendous, USB 3.0 needed a lot of time to reach consumers since the standard was completed in November 2008 while the very first devices to support it were announced in January 2010.
But Intel's involvement may get USB 3.0 adoption in a much higher gear, although this new chipsets are set to be released in Q1 2011 together with the new
Sandy Bridge processors, so we still have to wait until this comes standard with any new motherboard or laptop.
