If there's one market that I don't mind seeing overcrowded beyond saturation, then that market is definitely the Solid State Drive (aka SSD) one. What I mean is that since SSDs are still quite expensive for the mainstream user, overcrowding will lead to a drop in pricing and therefore a lot of very happy Mini Me's (you know, Austin Powers... “mini me?”). Speaking of solid state drives, Jay Di Es Inc., a Japanese company, has recently unveiled a new line up of SSDs.

Since SSDs are definitely the hard disk drives (HDDs) of the future and will sooner or later replace HDDs completely, how about we take a look at what they have to offer? The new solid state drives range from 32GB to 256 GB in capacity. However, the 256GB one is only available in a 2.5-inch form factor with the 1.8-inch ones being limited to a maximum size of 128GB. They are part of the Red Panther series of PATA and SATA drives and sport read speeds of 65MB per second and write speeds of 30 MB/s in case of the PATA ones (1.8 inches), while the 2.5-inch SATA SSDs will have a write speed of 160MB per second and read speeds of 220MB per second.

The prices for the 2.5-inch ones have not been released as of yet; however, the 1.8-inch Red Panther SSDs will cost somewhere around 110 USD, 196 dollars and 327 USD for the 32GB, 64GB and 128GB solid state drive models, respectively.

Now, a little something about why Solid State Drives are better than hard drives. They consume less power, are virtually error free, read and write speeds are ten times better than the fastest hard drive, thus allowing for very quick booting of the operating system and applications that are installed on the SSD and because there are no mechanical parts, they are very rugged and stable.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is .
