Since Twitter and Facebook are just about the coolest, hypest social networking services nowadays, they've also become the target of most manufacturers of various portable devices, who do their best in order to come up with all sorts of products providing native integration for both services mentioned above. I mean, just think about every smartphone released onto the market over the past year or so, they all boast about offering users access to both Facebook and Twitter.
And it seems Amazon is also keen on getting a larger slice of the social networking pie, since they've just announced that the future Kindle and Kindle DX
firmware update, version 2.5, will allow users to easily share book passages with friends on Facebook and Twitter directly from their Kindle.
Of course, that's not the only interesting new feature the firmware update will bring about. No, in fact, Kindle users will be able to organize their
books and documents into one or more collections, but also to zoom into PDFs and pan around to easily view small print and detailed tables or graphics. Other features that will be activated starting with the next firmware iteration will include the possibility to password protect one's
Kindle when not in use, and two new larger font sizes and sharper fonts for a more comfortable reading experience.
Best of all, users won't have to worry about updating the Kindle themselves, since all are designed to automatically check for and download updates when one is available. If an update is available, the Kindle will download and install it the next time the wireless connection is activated and the gadget goes into sleep mode.
Unfortunately, Kindle users will have to wait just a bit longer before being able to enjoy this enhanced level of functionality, and that's because, according to Amazon, the update will only get a limited release in the immediate future, with a broad release planned for late May 2010.
