After having released quite a few digital cameras and an HD camcorder, Kodak's offering has grown with two new digital frames, the Kodak Easyshare S730 Digital Frame and the Easyshare D830. Let's see what these two memory revivers can deliver.

The Easyshare S730 is a digital frame that supports JPEG, with EXIF 2.2. Funny this, being called a digital frame and supporting more video formats than pictures; talking about video, it can read MOV, AVI, MPEG and MPEG4, while audio goes for MP3, PCM, ADPCM, MPEG1 layer (1, 2, 3).

Dimensions are decent, not too bulky and yet not too small, sporting a 7-inch diagonal display size in a 22.6  x 15.5 x 3.8cm full body size. The resolution could be better, but I guess 800 x 480 will do just fine. Yes, you’ve seen it, the aspect ratio is a little low (15:9), so unless you crop your pictures, you won't see them on the full display area. Pictures are displayed crisp and vivid thanks to Kodak Color Science technology.

“Picture Finder allows consumers to relive memories that in some cases may have been forgotten,” John Blake, General Manager, Digital Capture and Devices, Vice President, Eastman Kodak Company, explains. “When users see a compelling picture in the collage mode, they can select that picture and the frame automatically retrieves and displays more pictures from or around that date.”

It also features an LED backlight, a touch-sensitive border for quick accessing controls on the front of the frame and a motion sensor that illuminates them as you reach for the frame. With the built-in rechargeable battery, you'll be sure you only have to unplug it for a closer look at some memories. Mind that it provides juice for just one hour.

Instead of a memory card slot, this digital frame has a whole card reader supporting SD, SDHC, MMC, MS, MS PRO/MS PRO DUO and, of course, xD. Nonetheless, the S730 also sports internal memory, 1GB in capacity, which should provide storage for about 8,000 pictures, probably resized at 800 x 480. Already available in Europe, it will become available in the US beginning with September 2009 for $139.00.

If you're not happy with only 7 inches, you can always go for the classier Easyshare D83 that measures 8 inches in diagonal. It has a normal 4:3 aspect ratio over a screen resolution of 800 x 600 and supports all the memory card types that the S730 takes. The D830 features an interchangeable frame faceplate, an Energy Star compliant power adapter, mercury-free panel and programmable on-off settings. Easy scrolling is supplied by the quick touch border.

“For every type of home décor and style, there are picture frames that enhance and express it,” Blake explains. “Our new Décor Series frames are customizable with scores of traditional frames, allowing people to share their pictures and memories in ways that match their décor and style preferences – even if those preferences change.”

Easyshare D830 can store up to 4,000 pictures in its 512MB embedded memory. Availability is set for September, retailing at $139.00. Just in case you need two additional inches in the screen size, you can wait for the Kodak Easyshare D1030 Digital Frame that will first be available in European markets starting with September for a price of $239.
