There
is still some time left until IFA 2010 opens it doors, but reports about
showcased products are starting to pop up over
the Web, some Korean sources claiming LG plans to present a 31
inch OLED TV that is going to be mass produced.
The
report comes from a Korean website stating the OLED TV will be
available to European customers following its announcement at IFA.
Unfortunately
we don't get any kind of time frame regarding the launch (or product specs), but more info will surely be available during IFA.
For
those of you that aren't familiar with LG's products, the company is
already selling a OLED TV in Europe, called the EL9500 OLED-TV, but,
at only 15 inch in diagonal, this is a lot smaller than the 31”
behemoth LG is planning.
If
the rumors do indeed prove themselves right, and LG brings this TV to
market, it still remains to be seen how well will this do as OLED
displays tend to be a lot more expensive then their LCD counterparts,
the 15 inch model that LG has available right now being priced at no
less then €1,999.
Sony
was another company that had an OLED TV for sale, the 11 inch XEL-1,
but the company was forced to discontinue its $2,500 offering because
sales figures weren't up to par.
Although
LG's OLED TV has a tough road in front of it, these is the type of
product that really pushes the industry forwards, as if it manages to
gather enough momentum the technology is poised to become maintream.
