Pretty much every person who's ever downloaded a video clip from the Internet has at least heard about DivX, if not using it, simply because the company's technologies are used in most of the video content available online. And given the increasingly higher importance of the Internet as a video content delivery vehicle, more and more consumer electronics manufacturers design their products in such a manner as to be DivX compliant.
And the latest big name on the CE market to make a DivX-related announcement is Korean company LG, who's worked with DivX for certifying more than 200 models of LG digital TVs, including the LH50, LH70, LH85, PS70 and PS80 series. In addition, a wider variety of innovative LG TVs are now DivX Certified for playback of full DivX HD.
The new DivX-certified TV sets will allow consumers to easily playback DivX HD videos from the PC or the Internet through the USB slot. Typical HD video requires a considerable amount of digital storage space, but DivX HD video provides a superior media experience by maintaining the highest visual quality while significantly reducing the video file size.
Hence, by using DivX encoding technology, users can fit approximately two hours of high-quality DivX HD video on an 8GB media card. Actually, Kevin Hell, Chief Executive Officer, DivX, Inc., has a few things to say on this subject, "DivX video technology has long been capable of producing great HD video with remarkably efficient compression. Now consumers will be able to easily enjoy those DivX HD files directly on their televisions. The LG digital TVs provide a comprehensive, cutting-edge digital media experience that clearly represents the future of consumer electronics devices."
LG's DivX-certified TV sets will become available in the United States and Europe in late May and late April, respectively, but given the fact that, after all, we're talking about a huge range of products, no specific price points have been provided.
