Since geo-tagging is becoming an increasingly popular trend among digital photographers, more and more manufacturers are seriously considering the idea of inserting such chipsets into their devices, or at least of developing accessories that will be able to automatically add geographical coordinates to any photo. And the latest rumor regarding such a device to hit the Internet is related to Pentax, and a possible GPS-enabled version of its K20D DSLR camera.
As some of you might remember, the Pentax K20D is a mid-range digital single-lens reflex camera that arrived on the market earlier this year, and was designed especially to be used outdoors, since it featured a waterproof body. It seems that, now, a press release leaked on a Greek website (
FullHD Greece) reveals that Pentax is about to launch a revamped version of the camera very soon, which will come with a built-in GPS module right out of the box.
According to the respective website, the new, GPS-enabled K20D will feature a 15-megapixel CMOS sensor, as well as an image stabilization system, plus the possibility to take the sensitivity up to ISO 6400. Furthermore, the new Pentax model will also sport a very generous 2.7-inch LCD screen, which will allow users to view the photos, but also to adjust some of their settings right in the camera, and store them in separate folders on the memory card.
Apparently, the new camera will have an initial estimated retail price of around 1,000 Euro (about $1,350, body only), which is significantly higher than the price of the current version, of under $1,000.
While it's rather difficult to tell whether this is just a hoax played by a website seeking some attention, or if it’s actually a piece of leaked information from the company's representatives, one thing's for sure: it has created quite a stir amid Pentax fans, who are eagerly waiting to see whether the company will confirm the rumor with an official release, or simply dismiss it.
