The Leica brand is one of the best-known manufacturers of expensive photographic equipment out there. And by expensive we don't necessarily mean high-end, since, quite often, the company's products are in reality not that different from some of the other mid-range/high-end cameras available on the market, the only important thing helping the company push up the price points being the brand name.
Earlier this year (in September, to be more precise), the company has released the D-Lux 4 digital camera, a 10-MP device which was back then touted as the “successor” of the M8 model. However, it seems that the company might be preparing a limited edition of the D-Lux 4, this time featuring a titanium case.
One of the first people (if not the first) to spot the new camera is a blogger by the name of
ianho, who has come across a photo of the D-Lux 4 Titanium. From there, things have begun to move at faster and faster pace. Leica-oriented
LeicaRumors website has had two different pieces on the subject, one picking up ianho's find, the other adding certain significant information regarding the pricing, which, apparently, will be pretty much the same as the regular D-Lux 4 model, namely somewhere around 995 USD. Moreover, LeicaRumors has also come up with a possible number of units for the limited edition, namely around 500 worldwide.
However, this is where things get very complicated. And that's because the people over at
AmateurPhotographer have some pretty different information regarding the number of available units. Apparently, they've talked to a Leica representative, who told them that 10,000 units were going to be available worldwide starting with January 2009. However, no info regarding the price was provided.
From all this mess, one thing's clear. The D-Lux 4 Titanium special limited edition will most likely see the light of day early in 2009. At what price and just how many of these things will be available....well, probably only time will tell.
