Besides being one of the best-known names on the digital camera market, Leica's also the manufacturer of some of the most expensive products in this field, most of its models being several times more expensive than others that provide pretty much the same level of image quality. And that's exactly the case with the device you're about to see as follows, namely the limited-edition M8.2 “Safari” camera, a digital camera that will most likely become a collector's edition in no time.
Thus, the whole Safari package will be available in a very limited edition, since only 500 units will be produced. Each LEICA M8.2 “Safari” will be painted in olive green and will be accompanied by a silver anodized finished LEICA ELMARIT-M 28mm f/2.8 ASPH.lens, an exclusive Billingham camera case and an elegant carrying strap, bearing an embossed Leica logo.
According to Leica, when designing this special edition, the company's engineers got some inspiration from the M cameras supplied by Leitz to the „Bundeswehr" (German Army) in the 1960's, as well as the LEICA R3 "Safari." For this reason, as mentioned above, the top cover, bottom plate, camera back and the leatherette „VULKANIT" covering are all coated with a resistant olive green paint finish, which will also protect the device against dust and dirt, besides providing a rather unique and special look.
The accessories that accompany the “Safari” are also quite elegant. First, there's the Billingham Combination Bag M "Safari," made of water resistant fabric "FibreNyte," which is large enough to take the complete "Safari" Set, as well as further lenses and accessories. The case sports an attractive carrying strap that consists of tan-colored calfskin, while the inner side is made from anti-slip pigskin.
We have mentioned that the M8.2 “Safari” edition would be a collector's item, but we should have also mentioned the fact that we're talking about a rich collector's edition. Hence, each of the 500 “Safari” packs will retail for somewhere around 14,000 US dollars (yeah, that's more expensive than a car), which will surely reduce the number of people willing to go out and purchase it.
