In general, whenever someone has something to say about Lenovo, it's typically related to a portable computing system or a desktop PC (but mostly notebooks). However, it would seem that the company is quite keen on tackling new market segments as well, but its choice for an expansion one is not exactly what we'd call the wisest.
Hence, according to a report by
PMP Today, it seems that Lenovo has decided to go for the portable multimedia players' (PMPs) market by rolling out a product of this type, called MRT800, which is as standard as these things come.
So, the player is equipped with a 4.3-inch 480 x 272 touchscreen and is capable of playing most of the files flying around the Internet right now, such as RM/RMVB, AVI, ASF, MP4, FLV video, MP3 and WMA, OGG, APE, FLAC, WAV audio. No word on the internal memory, but, apparently, the device will support a TF expansion of up to 4GB.
Now, we've got nothing against Lenovo (after all, its notebooks and desktops are quite OK products), but its move is... well, strange, to say the least. First of all, as you've been able to read above, the MRT800 can hardly be called an innovative device, so it's not likely to create a lot of positive buzz. Plus, it's targeting just the Chinese market (of all places), which, as everyone knows only too well, is filled to the brink with all sorts of clones and copies, most of which, however, are able to deliver an experience almost similar to the real devices, but at a fraction of the price.
For now, it's not exactly clear what price tag Lenovo has attached to the MRT800, but it would better be a pretty affordable one; otherwise, its PMP might find its way to the trashcan of CE industry a lot sooner than anyone might have guessed.
