Most computer users don't show that much interest in keyboards. Unless it's really uncomfortable or the keys simply don't work, any keyboard will do just fine. But there are some people (and their numbers are growing) who always need a bit of extra functionality. Things like illuminated keys, custom buttons, wireless capabilities, sound alerts etc.

Logitech has taken upon itself the task to build such distinctive devices to please those who always desire more from their peripherals, and one of its very successful products is the G15 gaming keyboard.

Design

He says: The G15 presents itself as a larger-than-average keyboard with elegant touches of black and smooth gray complemented by a robust futuristic design. LEDs placed under the keys provide for a cool night effect while also allowing users to type in the dark. Evolving from the original QWERTY design, the keyboard has an extra set of keys on the left side, for custom programmable functions. But everything fades in the background when compared to the useless top LCD display.

She says: The G15 keyboard comes with an interesting futuristic design indeed, but its elegance is rather reduced by its bulkiness, which makes it much more attractive for male gamers than female gamers. The key selling point of this keyboard seems to be the illuminated keys, along with the attractive LCD display.

However, even if the display may indeed turn out to be very useful, the LED keys don't exactly help, meaning that they allow users to see the keys better, but they can also exercise a greater strain on their eyes, making them very tiresome on the long run.

Features

He says: Although looking cool is part of the G15's motto, its only truly useful features are the illuminated keys and probably the six extra programmable keys. These come as an addition to the now usual multimedia keys and can be customized using the provided software (bundled with the device). Wireless would have been a nice touch, but I guess that stupid LCD and the integrated LEDs would have drained the batteries in just a couple of days.

As for other features, such as the all so praised LCD, I don't see what the fuss is all about. Yes, it can show your current Winamp playlists, CPU frequency and temperature, current time and a lot of other stuff, but why would you want that? You can easily check those things on the monitor using the good old mouse.

She says: The LCD display can prove itself useful, especially while playing a game, because it would be very uncomfortable to interrupt the game to check the song playing in Winamp, or certain system information that you might want to be informed about. Otherwise, they can easily be mistaken for some sort of manufacturers' “whim”, who tried to make their product look cooler, but not necessarily be more useful at the same time.

As for the illuminated keys, the three control levels may do more damage to the eyes, while trying to tape at night, than do them good. All in all, it may seem that the only advantage that you might get from this keyboard are the six programmable G-keys.

Performance

He says: Probably the main performance-related feature of the G15 has to do something with its keys. First of all, the keys are rather large (in any case, larger than those of usual keyboards), which helps users press them a lot easier. Plus, the feedback is very impressive, inflicting a very low amount of strain on the users' fingers.

She says: Regarding the level of performance provided by the G15, I believe that it's not too different from a regular keyboard, since you can't really say the level of help it provides is so very noticeable.

It's cute though that it provides intelligent cable management, keeping cords out of the way by routing them through channels on the underside of the keyboard. This way, you'll be able to have a more organized desk space, or at least a better looking one. Also, the one-touch controls for volume and media playback are quite pleasant, but that's not exactly something unusual for the keyboards available these days.

User Friendly

He says: The provided software comes with a friendly user interface, making the G15 extremely easy to configure and you can imagine there is no problem in using the actual keyboard. But the easy part stops here.

The problem is that while the G15 is easy (up to a certain point) to configure when using the Windows platform, when it comes to Linux support all its features go down the drain. Logitech's software is not Linux compatible and although there are users out there who have developed third party plug-ins, you don't even want to know how difficult it is (as a Windows user) to make it work.

She says: As for just how friendly this thing is, it might seem that Logitech's G15 doesn't really fare that well. This is because G15 shares an exclusive friendship with Windows, Linux users having to look for something else.

Value for money

G15 - very thin, isn't it?

He says: Just to make it simple, I'll only use four words: not worth your money. Just kidding. The truth is actually related to what a person wants/needs. Most gamers will like using the G15 and brag about what it can do (when in fact it doesn't really do anything). But most users will only look at the LCD a couple of times a day and probably forget about it in a few weeks.

She says: The G15 sells for a little bit over 100 Euro, a sum that may be worth paying, for gamers, that, bot for people who just need a smart keyboard, this may not be the ideal choice. However, it all depends on one's individual choice.

Cool Factor

He says: Ooooo yeah, you can bet the damn thing is cool. Not fashionable cool, but geek-like cool. All the orange LEDs and unique LCD are sure to turn a few heads. The cool futuristic design also adds up to the coolness factor. We all appreciate a good looking IT gadget, but the G15 just seems like overkill in my opinion. It's not saying it doesn't show good taste, just not the kind of taste you would show of in a living room.

She says: The G15 does look pretty good for a keyboard, although its practical aspects are rather doubtful. However, it's likely that it would become obsolete rapidly, judging by the numerous innovations in the field, so investing in one of these devices, might not be an extraordinary idea. It's your call!
