According to
Techeye, the mayor of London, Boris Johnson made the promise to “cover London in Wi-Fi” by 2012 at the Google Zeitgeist event held in Hertfordshire: “every lampost and every bus stop will one day very soon, and before the 2012 Olympics, be Wi-Fi enabled” said Brian Johnson.
Of course this is
great news for London residents and I bet everybody living elsewhere is now dreaming about the mayor in their city making similar announcements very soon. The Wi-Fi coverage is a major problem, especially since we are bombarded with Wi-Fi-enabled devices that are more or less useless without an
internet connection. Plus, everything we do is related to the Internet (it's practically a part of our lifestyles), which makes Wi-Fi a basic necessity nowadays.
So from now on, whenever checking up the lamposts for traffic cameras, be sure to look for the Wi-Fi equipment as well, in order to do some quick Google-ing while waiting at the stop lights. Boris Johnson is serious about this promise, as the complete Wi-Fi coverage is just part of City Hall's plan to turn London in the technology capital of the world. Look for the Wifi London project, as this is the official name for this part of their major plans.
Until now only 22 of the 32 boroughs of London have singed with the City Hall for this project and Boris Johnson is currently working on convincing the other ones. The way he plans to apply the plan is quite simple and very doable, since he is going to
use the street lights and bus stops as support for the hotspots, as well as for getting the required amount of electrical power.
Boris Johnson did not mention anything about the payment plan however, so don't throw your 3G-capable gadgets yet, Londoners.
