I've recently learned from the Nokero presentation video, which you can find here as well, that around the world, 1.6 billion people don't have access, or cannot afford an electric lighting system and thus they are either deprived of this basic need or use other polluting and more expensive materials in order to have the very much needed light during nighttime. This is why I find the Nokero N100 so promising, since it is the first bulb that produces light by harnessing solar energy. It also uses a rechargeable battery and so it is not dependent on a traditional electricity system. Simply hang it on a tree branch... and there will be light.
"We've done everything we can to make this solar bulb affordable and long-lasting so the people who need it can afford it, and reap the benefits, " said Nokero's inventor and founder Stephen Katsaros. "There are so many ways this product can change lives: It can help keep families and shopkeepers safe, help students study at night, eradicate indoor pollution, and reduce worldwide carbon emissions. There's no other product like this on the market," Katsaros said. "This bulb represents our best chance at eradicating an outdated, dangerous practice and replacing it with a safe, sustainable solution."
Considering the fact that disaster areas usually have the whole infrastructure affected or completely destroyed, the Nokero N100 seems more practical and easier to transport than generators or other temporary solutions that rescue teams use. And when you think about people in developing countries who don't have electric light at all, the N100 starts to make even more sense.
This bulb is weatherproof, consists of five LEDs and can run for about four hours on a complete charge of its battery. The solar charging throughout the day can provide an extra two hours of light to people who currently don't have access to it.
