Limited to small screens such as the ones used in smartphones or digital cameras, OLED panels have started to make their way into larger displays, Mitsubishi just announcing the Diamond Vision OLED screen meant to be used in areas where a 100-inch and above display is required.
Mitsubishi managed to achieve this by taking an entirely new approach for their OLED screen, that is built by connecting a number of standard modules, each measuring 384mm both in height and width (or about 21 inches in diameter), together to form one custom display that can have any size or shape. Offering a maximum brightness of 1,200cd/m² and twice the contrast of other LED products built by the company, these displays are suitable for installation in relatively brightly-lit areas such as commercial facilities, stations and airports. The major disadvantage of this technology is that is offers a rather small resolution, about 111,111 pixels/m2, which doesn't make it suitable for viewing up close, Mitsubishi recommending a minimum of two meters between the screen and the viewer. But then again we are talking about some really large displays that are meant to be placed in public spaces so viewers would rarely find themselves in a situation where they could be bothered by the small resolution. Mitsubishi says the Diamond Vision OLED screens will be showcased at the company's booth at Ceatec Japan 2010 held between 5-9 of October.
However sales will start a bit sooner then this, the display modules being available worldwide on September 21. We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
