Originating as a store called “The Free People's Store”, back in the 1970s, Urban Outfitters is a brand known for its funky fashion and household products and for the numerous controversies it drew upon itself because of several items labeled as instigating to violence and religious discrimination. However, Urban Outfitters is also known for its various innovative and original accessories, such as the Mix Tape Portable DJ Mixer.
Despite of the fact that it might look like a toy at a first glance or, better yet, like a nasty bling-bling, the Mix Tape Portable DJ Mixer is actually a true mixing device, perfect for mobile DJs. This super compact mixing device looks exactly like a cassette tape, but one that has been gold-painted.
Dubbed the Urban DJ, the Mix Tape features a smooth cross-fader, with dual 3.5 mm stereo inputs, being thus compatible with iPods, iPhones, music-enabled cell phones, MP3 players and just about any other audio device out there. It also includes a headphone monitor jack, so that you can cue up your next track, without missing a beat.
We have already established that the Mix Tape Portable DJ Mixer can blend tracks from two different portable media players. However, there's a little bit of a strategic problem here, namely the fact that the user must be willing and able to carry around two media playing devices at once.
This is indeed a pretty cool device and there's no doubt that it is also portable (it measures 4 x 2.5 x 5 inches), but it's highly unlikely that someone would actually carry it around, together with two PMPs, just to experience the power that lies in a DJ's skills.
The Mix Tape Portable DJ Mixer is Mac and PC compatible and requires only 2 AAA batteries to work. If you really want to have one of your own, you can only order it online, for 30 US dollars.
