From the logo to its design,
Point of View really looks like it enjoys its partnership with NVIDIA. I mean just look at its ION-based Mobii ION (duh!) 230 netbook! Announced a while back but made official only recently, the device looks like it was made by NVIDIA itself. Since the Mobii will be made available within the following weeks, let us take a closer look under its hood and see what hardware it is really packing.
The device will weight a bit under 1.4 kg, is going to sport a 10.2-inch LCD screen with a maximum resolution of 1024 x 600 and will be powered by an Atom 230 processor with 1GB of DDR2 memory. The ION GPU is Shader Model 4.0 enabled, as well as DirectX 10 ready. With technologies such as CUDA and PurevideoHD, the device is indeed a bit (if not a lot) better than most of the competition on the market.
Other options include a 160GB HDD, SD/MMC card reader, wireless networking, optional Bluetooth 2.0 and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. It offers Ethernet connectivity and two USB 2.0 ports. The standard battery (6-cell version) can cope with up to four hours of runtime before the power literally runs out. Because with this netbook, you will definitely run laps around its more common Intel Atom but no ION-based siblings.
The netbook will be available in black, red and lime. Though seeing how it comes with Linux preinstalled really makes me hope that a Windows option (come on 7... or at least XP) will be made available. The design looks pretty OK, with a nice big NVIDIA-resembling logo on the case, vivid colors and a goodwill inspiring finishing. I wish a lot more
ION-based netbooks were around.
