Since we're not exactly going through the best possible period right now as far as the economy is concerned, the various content providers are trying their best in order to come up with certain deals and partnerships that will provide even more customer exposure for their respective services. And the latest announcement of this type comes from the two best-known names in this particular field, namely rental service Netflix and digital television services provider TiVo, who have just inked a deal that could prove to be potentially very lucrative for both parties involved.
The weak economy is also mentioned as one of the reasons why the two companies believe this deal will be a very successful one. “With so much talk focusing on the economy these days, this partnership makes more sense than ever because it brings people more movies at home, offering substantially more entertainment options than cable or satellite", said Tara Maitra, GM and Vice President of Content Services at TiVo Inc. Netflix seems to believe pretty much the same thing since, according to Leslie Kilgore, Netflix Chief Marketing Officer, “Netflix offers an unbeatable combination of convenience, selection, and value, which now extends to TiVo customers. This partnership is a win-win-win for Netflix, TiVo, and consumers alike.”
Now that we've seen that the two companies are pretty content about their partnership, let's see exactly what users will be able to enjoy. Thus, the additional service will be offered (at no additional charge) to those people who subscribe to both Netflix and TiVo services, who will be able to browse through a library of more than 12,000 movies and TV episodes provided by Netflix.
The movies are streamed from Netflix through TiVo DVRs via wired or wireless broadband connection and a Netflix Queue-based user interface. Members will first have to visit the Netflix Web site to add movies and TV episodes to their individual instant Queues, which will be then automatically displayed on subscribers’ TVs and will be available to watch instantly through the TiVo service. Furthermore, the TiVo remote can be used for browsing the instant Queue, making selections right on the TV screen, as well as pausing, fast-forwarding, rewinding and re-starting the video clips.
And since Netflix also has a limited selection of HD clips available, we'll most likely see that delivered as well, which brings even more value to this announcement.
