Despite the fact that Panasonic's ToughBooks are probably the best-known rugged portable computing systems out there, they're by no means the only ones. GammaTech also manufacturers such products in its Durabook line, the latest addition to the series being the D14RM model, built around Intel's Montevina platform.

First and foremost, it's important to mention the fact that the Durabook D14RM is able to take quite a hefty amount of shocks, providing protection against drop, shock, spill and dust. This is possible due to the fact that this system features a magnesium alloy case that is 20 times stronger than ABS plastic. Plus, the anti-shock mounting design protects the device's LCD and hard disk drive from damage and data loss that would usually occur with sudden shock or drop.

In addition to a spill-resistant keyboard, touchpad and switches, the DURABOOK D14RM notebook's spill-resistant design stops spills from leaking into sensitive interior components. The unit also includes input/output port rubber caps to provide for dust resistance.

The notebook features a 14.1-inch WXGA display (1280x800 resolution) and LED lighted keyboard. A Smart card reader, fingerprint scanner and TPM 1.2 technology help keep important data secure for DURABOOK D14RM customers. The notebook includes four USB ports and one HDMI port for enhanced connectivity.

On the inside, we can also find an Intel Core 2 Duo Processor (4MB L2 Cache, 667MHZ FSB), two DDR II SODIMM Slots 256/512/1024/2048MB, the maximum amount of supported RAM being 3GB (2GB+1GB). Storage is provided by a SATA 150 HDD unit, whose size ranges according to the user's desire. Moreover, optional features such as resistive-type touch screen, built-in webcam and GPS allow mobile professionals to customize their computing experience.

Of course, such ruggedness does come at a price, namely that of dimensions. Hence, the Durabook D14 measures 352mm x 256mm x 37-41mm, and weighs 5.5 lbs (2.5 kg), which makes it a bit tough to handle. Unfortunately, pricing has not been detailed.
