By definition, GPS trackers are those devices that use the GPS system in order to trace the route followed by a certain object (or person). These things come in all shapes and sizes nowadays, but one of the most interesting devices of this type has just been launched by the Holux company in the form of their (rather unimaginatively named) GPS Tracker 005 model.

As the name says it, the main feature provided by the device from Holux is to permanently track one's position and report it, either via SMS (yes, it does sport a built-in SIM card) or HTTP, or by simply connecting the device to a host computer via a mini-USB connector. Even more, the device also supports the TCP/IP protocol, used in order to download data from or upload data to the dedicated server.

Now that we took a quick look at the device's main functions, let's see what really makes it tick, namely, what's on the inside. In order to send GSM alerts and connect to the Internet via GPRS, the device uses an MTK6223 GSM chip, accompanied by a 2-band GSM antenna. The GPS chip has the same origin (MTK), namely the 3318 model, which provides 32-channel reception, a cold start time of 36 seconds, a warm start time of 33 seconds and a hot start time of 2 seconds.

As mentioned earlier, one of the tracker's main features is represented by its size, as well as the fact that it “borrows” the shape of a watch, equipped with a 96 x 64 dots, FSTN display that provides a viewing area of 27.8mm x 18.9mm. The whole thing is powered by 500 mAh, rechargeable, Li-Ion battery, which provides a maximum working time of around 60 hours, with position recording at fixed intervals of 15 minutes.
