While we're still quite far away from the moment we'll have a complete level of integration between cars and mobile phones (although that moment is, in fact, approaching pretty fast), there are quite a few devices out there that enable enhanced control over our vehicle's functions via our own mobile phones, the latest we've come across being the Kiwi Wifi and Kiwi Bluetooth, which allow drivers to connect wirelessly from their iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch or Android mobile phone to their vehicle’s onboard diagnostic port.
If you've never heard of the Kiwi up until now, you should probably know that we're talking about a Plug and Play
hardware piece that installs into any 1996 and later vehicle by plugging into the car’s OBDII port that is typically located underneath the steering console.
With a measurement of 2.75 x 1.25 x 0.6 inches it is basically invisible to the eye, and, when connected to Kiwi Wifi or Kiwi Bluetooth, it turns mobile devices into a powerful automotive tool displaying speed, RPM, engine load, Real Time Dyno, and engine check diagnostics.
The Kiwi Wifi connects a user’s iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch via the Wi-Fi network to
establish a link and is compatible with applications such as Rev, DashCommand, SpeedPORT and FuzzyCar.
Its set of features includes check engine diagnostic tools, horsepower and torque calculations, gauge themes, race utilities and much more.
The Kiwi WiFi is available now at a suggested retail price of $149.99 (US).
Similar in function to the Kiwi Wifi, the Kiwi Bluetooth is designed for Android phones and connects via a Bluetooth signal using the Kiwi hardware and has compatible applications such as Torque, alOBD Scanner, OBDroid, and VoyagerConnect, which are available on the Android Market for download.
Features include fuel consumption MPG meter, check engine diagnostic tools, horsepower and torque calculations, gauge themes, race utilities and much more and the solution is available now at a suggested retail price of $99.99 (US).
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is
