Despite the fact that Samsung has established itself as a very serious (and sometimes, quite iron-fisted) leader in certain segments of the CE market, there are others where, quite surprisingly, it simply doesn't manage to gain more ground. That's pretty much the case with the field of the PMPs (portable media players), where, even if having a fairly serious and strong lineup, it's not really as widespread as Apple or other brands.
In any case, this is also the subject of the company's latest product launch, namely the R0
PMP (a.k.a the YP-R0), which has just made a surprise appearance in Korea. The device in question has a very slim (just 8.8-mm deep) form factor, accompanied by a 2.6-inch TFT LCD screen, as well as 4GB or 8GB of internal memory (expandable up to 16GB via an included microSD card slot).
The gadget can be used for viewing a wide variety of
multimedia content including video, music and pictures. Actually, in order to enable easy viewing of high-quality video, the Samsung R0 supports a range of popular formats including DivX, XviD, H.264 and WMV, eliminating the need for external conversion. In addition, sound quality is boosted by Samsung’s patented DNSe 3.0 sound enhancement technology.
Samsung's R0 has an FM Radio, second-language acquisition programs and a text/photo viewer, and, to match more people's tastes, is available in three colors: Indie Black, Techno Silver, and Rap Pink.
“The R0 is a premium device with a stylish design, convenient user interface and exceptional multimedia capabilities,” said Jooho Song, Vice President, Samsung Electronics. “The R0 also offers users the convenience of a built-in MicroSD slot so they can enjoy flexibility in terms of memory capacity while experiencing all the features and functionality.”
For the time being, Samsung's new YP-RO portable media player will only be available on the
Korean market, with the official prices being set at KRW139,000 for the 4GB model (roughly 120 US dollars) and KRW179,000 ($155) for the 8GB flavor. Not too shabby, all things (and features) considered.
