Despite the fact that its WALKMAN line of portable multimedia players is still far from enjoying the level of success the first items from this series did back when they played audio cassettes instead of digital content, the Japanese company Sony doesn't really seem to be willing to give up on them just yet. In fact, Sony's constantly rolling out new products of this type, the latest in the series being a couple of models equipped with OLED displays, namely the 16GB NWZ-X1050 and the 32GB NWZ-X1060.
Apart from the amount of storage they can provide, the two devices from Sony are actually very similar, starting right from the 3-inch touchscreen OLED display, which offers a 432 x 240 pixel resolution and ending with the extensive file type support the fresh portable players can provide.
Hence, these Walkman players will work quite well with MP3, WMA, ATRAC ATRAC Advanced Lossless, PCM/AAC and HE-AAC files, but can also be used for viewing photos, listening to radio, watching 1-seg TV, browsing the Internet and watching clips from YouTube.
And if you were wondering just how these features are possible, the answer is a very simple one: the Walkman player has a built-in IEEE 802.11b/g module, which sports an estimate range of around 50 meters and supports some of the most common encryption mechanisms, including here WEP/WPA/WPA2 WEP/WPA/WPA2.
Moreover, these new devices from Sony will be quite easy to carry around, since they measure somewhere around 96.5 x 52 x 9.8 mm, at an overall weight of about 98 grams.
Both of the OLED Walkman PMPs from Sony are slated to arrive on the Japanese market towards the end of April and will sell for 40,000 yen (US $400) - the 16GB NWZ-X1050 and 50,000 yen ($500) - the 32GB NWZ-X1060, which are some pretty decent price points, given the extensive range of features these things can offer.
