I don't know just how many of you remember those old “Space Ghost” cartoons, as well as those armbands featuring every possible “ray” one might imagine the main character wore. Anyway, I'm pretty sure there was a stun ray there as well, which brings us to the subject at hand, namely that of the X12 stun gun.
As
ChannelNews Asia reports, during the Global Security Asia 2009, Taser officially presented its X12 shotgun, a device that will be able to actually deliver a “shocking” load from a distance of up to 27 meters. The best part about this thing is that, unlike classic Taser guns (the X26 model), which provide a rather small range (limited by the presence of wires), the new X12 doesn't involve any wires, which pushes its range a lot further, thus ensuring a higher level of safety for the person using it.
The secret behind the lack of wires is the TASER XREP (Extended Range Electronic Projectile), a self-contained, wireless electronic control device (ECD) that fires from a 12-gauge shotgun. It delivers similar neuro muscular incapacitation (NMI) bio-effect as the TASER X26 ECD, but can be delivered to a distance of 90 feet (27 meters), combining blunt impact force, plus field-proven TASER NMI. The XREP cartridge comes pre-packaged in a shell that is compatible with most existing smoothbore and rifled barrel 12-gauge shotguns.
The shotgun used for delivering the respective round (TASER X12 LLS Shotgun) is manufactured by Mossberg and sports a new proprietary patent-pending Radial Ammunition Key system that prevents the weapon from accepting lethal 12-gauge rounds, eliminating the possibility of loading deadly ammunition during high stress situations. Furthermore, it packs a tactical collapsible stock, as well as a pistol grip and sling.
No pricing details have been provided for the time being related to the X12, but it seems that there are already a lot of law-enforcement agencies and police forces from various
countries interested in this non-lethal weapon, so we might see it in action quite soon.
