The TrueBeam system recently announced by Varian Medical Systems is an advanced machine designed to help the patients with most forms of cancer receive a better analysis of and treatment for their disease. It is a platform for image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery that works at never-before-seen speeds, while treating a moving target.
"It opens the door to the development of new and improved approaches for treating cancer and other medical conditions commonly treated with image-guided radiotherapy and radiosurgery," Tim Guertin, president and CEO of Varian Medical Systems, said. "We've also given TrueBeam a patient-friendly look with a beautiful sleek design, but it's what's under the covers that makes this system so special. It's intuitive, intelligent, and we think it is a game changer."
All forms of advanced external-beam radiotherapy are supported by the TrueBeam, thanks to many technologies such as the RapidArc (previously developed by Varian Medical Systems) integrated in this revolutionary medical apparatus. The tech piece behind the advanced radiosurgery capabilities of the TrueBeam is called the TrueBeam STx. The whole machine is 50% faster than previous Varian medical systems and can deliver doses at a rate of up to 2,400 monitor units per minute. Another good example of how fast and reliable the TrueBeam is would be the fact that it performs complex radiosurgery in five to 20 minutes’ time, while these operations usually take about 40 minutes to an hour to complete.
"When we introduced RapidArc radiotherapy, we were thrilled to see treatments done in about 2 minutes," Guertin stated. "With TrueBeam, RapidArc treatments can now be completed in about a minute."
The official announcement also says that TrueBeam employs a user-friendly interface on a graphical console that contains all the controls for the operations that this medical system is capable of. A Short video demonstration can be seen after the break. What you will not see in the clip is that the TrueBeam creates 3-D X-ray images with a 25% reduction in X-ray doses to the patient. You can learn more about this system from the press release on Prnewswire or from the official Varian website.
