Narcissus was a hero in Greek mythology renowned for his outstanding beauty. He was a very cruel person, however, mocking those that loved him. His behavior quickly brought the wrath of the gods upon him, since he fell in love with his reflection in a pool of water as punishment. Not realizing it was his own and unable to leave at the sight of such beauty, he perished. His story has given birth to the trait now known as “narcissism.”
“So, what Greek mythology and a bad human trait have to do with gadgets?” you ask. Well, nothing unless you're interested and want to check out the 5mm thin Newsmy XO. It is a PMP supporting a 1.5-inch OLED display, made out of aluminum and able to play up to 4 GB of AVI, MP3, WMA, APE or FLAC media files. If you're not satisfied with just playing your favorite media, there's a voice recorder for all you reporters out there and also an FM radio should you get tired of your music files and want to listen to some other tunes.
The real deal with the Newsmy XO, however, is not the OLED display, not the media support, not the voice recording, nor the FM radio, but the fact that the device doubles as a mirror. The gadget is ultra thin (5 mm is indeed thin), very light and has an incorporated equalizer. It can browse pictures, has wireless connectivity (as far as I can tell from the producer's Chinese-only page) and can be hooked up to one’s car.
I said a long time ago that OLED was the future and I stand by my statement since this device clearly proves the versatility of OLED technology. The device has been priced at around 299 yuan (about 44 USD) and if the information proves to be accurate, then this might me the cheapest MP3 player ever, not to mention the most good looking of all.
It might replace the iPod and the mirror altogether. Or not, God knows there is enough room to store an elephant in a woman's purse.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
