There's big news for all of you
Nintendo fans out there, cause if the rumors are true then Nintendo
is prepping a huge surprise, the Wii 2, that will feature a HD output
and a Blu-ray drive.
Rumors about a future version of the
Wii have started to surface in late 2009, but things are set to get
interesting again as a website called
Girlgamerssuck (how do they
came up with those names?), claims that a “reliable source” told
them the Wii 2 will feature a Blu-ray optical drive.
Although the website is sure about the
Blu-ray drive, HD connectivity is not so certain, but let's just say
that a Blu-ray unit without HD output doesn't make much sense.
If the source is right I would say that
1080p is almost a given considering how badly Nintendo has to catch up
to the competition in this domain.
Other details have not yet surfaced but
expect some changes to the graphics subsystem as Nintendo's Hollywood
GPU, built by ATI, is in turn based on the chip used inside the
GameCube.
Being such an old design it seems
pretty unlikely that the Hollywood
GPU has the power needed to decode
Blu-ray movies so Nintendo had some upgrading to do.
Whether this would be limited to adding
a H.264/VC-1 decoding unit or will go as far as to require a complete GPU redesign
remains to be seen.
Timewise the new
console should arrive
somewhere in 2011 and Nintendo will call this the Wii 2 or Wii HD, but one thing is certain.
If the roumors are true, Nintendo is set to make a huge
splash (yet again) in the entertainment market.
