Recent day smartphones come packed full of sensors and features that are not always used up to their fullest extent, Nokia presenting a new prototype app that pairs the N8's camera and HDMI connection with your HDTV in order to transform it into a huge touch enabled display.
For this to work, the Plug and Touch app uses the 12MP camera available in the Nokia N8 smartphone to track the users hand movement across the HDTV screen, this enabling him, or her, to
scroll and zoom in and out of pictures, check RSS feeds or use a simple calculator app.
Although pretty impressive, you have to bear in mind that this type of touch input can't be very precise, so using this method for writing text messages or drawing isn't as simple as expected, this features not being enabled in the prototype app.
There are other limitations too, such as the need of keeping the phone at about five feet away from the display or the need for a special stand to keep the N8 directed towards the HDTV.
For now, Nokia says they have no plans on releasing this app, but you never know what the future may hold, since this could prove to be a really useful application for some of the N8's users.
This could also spark some ideas for other mobile operating systems developers, since adding such a capability requires only a camera-enabled phone that also packs video out capabilities. (via engadget)
