The concept of the foldable (not clamshell) mobile phone isn't exactly something new. Nokia designed a concept like that years ago, and although that was just a cheap marketing gimmick (that concept was no way near reality at that time), the idea is still alive and Samsung's flexible OLED display technology is the main candidate for this type of devices.
Foldable OLED screen mobile phones could prove to be the next step in phone (r)evolution. This could open up a whole new area of innovation. Size and form factor could become something of the past. Imagine a mobile phone that could take (almost) any shape you want, adapting it to fit your needs. Most mobile phones these days are required to trade some features for a compact size. Foldable technology would eliminate such concerns.
As you might have noticed, mobile phones have become almost saturated with features. Some Nokia models come with so many features that they out-pace even netbooks solutions. Phones have now become truly portable multimedia centers, and it's just a question of how and when will the next revolution occur.
The market is in need of something new, otherwise pretty soon feature-rich phones will become as common as dental floss. Companies need something new in order to keep the market spinning, which is always good for business. It is just a matter of time until technology evolves enough to give birth to the future foldable phone. E-Ink was just a concept 7 years ago, and today there are lots of existing prototypes.
This is how technology works, first get it good on paper, then wait until it's actually doable. If we stayed around waiting for things to evolve without them being driven by our “needs”, technology would probably evolve a lot slower. Technology evolution is the one thing that will revolutionize humanity in a way we can't even imagine right now, but, unfortunately this revolution is still far away, due to various economic reasons.
