Although Sony recently denied any PSP2 rumors, an anonymous tip told Gizmodo that PSP2 games are already being developed and that PSP3000 isn't the last incarnation of the classic PlayStation Portable. Rumor has it that the PSP-4000 will arrive sometime in 2009 and the PSP2 will present itself shortly after. If this means late 2009 or 2010, nobody knows yet. And if they do, they sure haven't told us.
Actually the above information regarding the time line of the PSP2 is 100% true, since it surely won't be released this year, and if it's said to appear after some 2009 event, this could mean anything. So, actually, all we have by now is that there will be another PSP-X000 before an entire new PSP will be released, and that it will be released sometime in 2009.
I'm sure the respective source would have provided a lot more information, but probably didnt' want to draw too much wrath from Sony. News sources aside, It will be interesting to see what Sony comes up with as the successor of the original PSP. This device has been a tremendous success in the portable gaming and multimedia world and it will be difficult for the company to compete against itself. It's kind of like what happened with Microsoft when it released Windows Vista; XP was such a solid platform that custoners weren't craving to spend money on a new system. The old saying “if it ain't broke, don't fix it” comes to mind.
But the truth is that games always evolve and better graphics with improved physics are always required to keep today's gamers entertained. Nintendo might have another opinion on the subject, but the giant might probably reach the same conclusion in a couple of years. The Wii hasn't been keeping its grounds for some time now, and if you have a look at its latest titles, you will be hard pressed to recognize a long awaited name. This is because a game is developed to provide a certain experience, and by using the Wiis hardware, that experience can't be achieved because of hardware limitations.
