Remember the sudden surge of nettop computers that were introduced as soon as the NVIDIA ION platform hit the market? Well, thank God it stopped, with only a few devices popping up from time to time to remember us why we need to acquire one such machine. You know why:
very small, powerful enough to output images via the HDMI connection (aka 1080p) and perfect for the light user that only wants some casual gaming, to view some movies on his or her HDTV and to surf the web from time to time.
Time to check out the latest from Packard Bell, namely the imedia XS nettop. From the looks of it, the device resembles
the Aspire Revo, which is not so strange, seeing how Acer and Packard Bell are basically the same company. I mentioned the Aspire Revo, I mentioned the fact that the imedia nettop resembles it... you must already be expecting Revo-like specifications and, let me tell you, my friends, that you would not be wrong. Onward to the specs list to see what we can dig up.
The device is powered by the almighty Atom processor, but, this time, not the N270, but the dual core wonder Atom 330 that runs at a speed of 1.6 GHz. It comes with a hard drive that allows for the adding of as much as 160GB of data. As far as memory goes, the device sports as much as 2GB of RAM, while the graphics is handled by the mighty ION platform with GeForce 9400 integrated graphics, Direct X and HDMI-capable.
There is also a four-in-one card reader, LAN and WiFi connectivity, Realtek audio (did you notice that everywhere you looked, in almost every PC you found Realtek audio?), as well as D-Sub and HDMI outputs. Users in the UK will get the Windows Vista Home Premium (yes, no Windows 7) -equipped device for 249 pounds.
We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there. That's why we thought it would be a good idea to create an email address for you to help us a little in finding gadgets we missed. Interesting links are bound to be posted with recognition going mainly to those who submit. The address is
