As some of you might know, the whole
netbook craze started from a very interesting initiative, called OLPC (One Laptop per Child), which aimed at designing a low-cost, affordable portable computer to be distributed freely in developing countries. And while the OLPC Foundation is still struggling to reach this goal, others have cashed in on its idea, rolling out ultra-small, ultra-portable computing devices designed for adults and kids alike.
Nevertheless, the device you're about to see as follows, namely the PeeWee Pivot Tablet Laptop, is aimed squarely at the second category mentioned above, children. For this reason, it is spill and drop resistant, and comes pre-loaded with 10 age appropriate software and game titles for Pre-K, Early Elementary, or Upper Elementary students. PeeWee also includes its proprietary security suite on each laptop, giving parents full control of how and when their children use the laptop.Other interesting design features include a convertible rotating screen and touch tablet with stylus, a free Walt Disney Windows XP Theme, and a 1.3-megapixel webcam that rotates 180 degrees. And speaking of “rotations,” it's also important to mention the fact that this netbook for kids sports an accelerometer, which rotates as the device is rotated, as well as a tablet sensor, which automatically rotates the display when switching from clamshell to tablet mode.
Despite the fact that the outside is indeed pretty special, on the inside, the PeeWee is nothing more than your ordinary, standard netbook, featuring an Intel Atom N270 processor running at 1.6GHz, accompanied by an Intel 945GSE Chipset, 60GB 1.8-inch PATA HDD and 1GB of RAM memory. The connectivity options are similar to those encountered in the case of most netbooks and the device also comes packed with an 8.9-inch 1024x600 pixel touchscreen LCD display.
The PeeWee Pivot Tablet Laptop starts at 600 US dollars, which is indeed a pretty hefty price point for a portable computing system on the one hand, and makes this thing a lot more than a toy computer, on the other hand.
