Although modern home entertainment systems have become extremely complex, some of them featuring widescreen HDTVs whose diagonal size goes even above 46 or 52 inches, it's still quite difficult to enjoy the same feeling one experiences when actually going “to the movies,” in a real cinema. However, it seems that Philips is trying to solve this issue, since it has just unveiled the Cinema 21:9 LCD TV, a device that allows users to enjoy movies exactly as they would do at the cinema.
Philips offers just a few pieces of technical information at this time, pointing out the fact that we're dealing with a 56-inch LCD with a 21:9 aspect ratio, so movies in the 2.39:1 format completely fill the screen. Furthermore, this device sports a three-sided Ambilight Spectra system, for an even more immersive experience.
It's also interesting to mention the fact that, according to Philips, the device will include “highly advanced formatting technology” which will help adapt regular 16:9 content to fill the 21:9 screen. This way, the Cinema LCD TV will solve one of the nastiest problems encountered in the case of many HDTVs, namely that of the pesky black lines above and below the actual image.
And now, since we've got no technical data, no pricing information, and no certain availability date (apart from that elusive “Spring 2009”), we'll just leave you with what the company's officials (namely Des Power, Senior Vice President Marketing Television, Philips Consumer Lifestyle) have to say about this mysterious, yet apparently great product.
“With our unique Cinema 21:9 we have developed a television which takes you as close to the experience that you enjoy at the cinema as you can get without buying a ticket. We believe that to really become absorbed in watching a film at home consumers are looking for a real cinematic viewing experience, so we have launched the world’s first cinema-proportioned TV screen perfectly complemented by our immersive Ambilight technology.”
