If you are one of those paranoid types of people that think the CIA is constantly watching your every move, then you mustn't use the Move controller that Sony has recently
announced at the Game Developers Conference for the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation Eye has been upgraded to use some technologies that will spook you even more, because as you probably know by now, the Move's smooth moves are guaranteed only if used together with the webcam.
According to
Joystiq, the demonstration done by Sony at GDC left everyone there impressed with the PS3's tracking abilities, especially for the head movements and gestures.
We already know that the Move uses a three-axis gyroscope, a three-axis accelerometer and a terrestrial magnetic field sensor, which help with the general body placement and movements detection, but apart from this, the PlayStation Eye uses special software that will not only detects the user's face, but gender, movements, age, opening and closing of the eyes and whether they are smiling or not, but that one you already knew from digital cameras.
The amazing part is that the
newly developed SDK will be used with the PlayStation Eye cam to produce very realistic head animations according to the expressions of your face, which will one day be a great attribute of a new type of social interaction - via avatars - an online chatting system.
Not only this, but all the functions that help detect the multitude of head characteristics will be handled by the Cell CPU, which means very little resources are going to be used overall, thus the whole experience will not be affected. Low latency and high precision are the strongest characteristics of the new Move controller that Sony released for the PS3 and fortunately for all gamers, we are only witnessing the beginning of it.
There is a lot of space for improvements left and with a minimum of resources used by the console, the whole
gaming experience is about to change.
