You know, when you're planning on selling something, you have to think about a sales pitch. A marketing strategy that will not only shock but also convince people to buy what you are trying to sell. Sure, you could do some intense promoting and marketing like Sony, or this: get a
robot girl, put a wedding dress on her, put a wedding bouquet in her hands and make her... it... whatever... walk on a stage in the middle of a fashion presentation.
And no, I am not joking, “he,” “she,” or “it” is real and the event happened in Osaka. The HRP-4C robot showed up during a fashion presentation, throwing “casual sidelong glances at the delighted audience.” Now, I don't exactly know how delighted the audience was since they weren't probably expecting to see a robot walking around wearing a wedding dress. The groom was not to be found for further comments, however.
I guess he was too stressed by the incoming wedding and the fact that he'll be marrying a robot that he didn't feel like talking to anymore. Though think of it this way: she'll never be overweight (well, unless you plan on upgrading her) and if she's got an “open source” operating system... well all the better, right? By the way, I am wondering... do female
robots have a “mute” button? You know, for when you want a little time off for yourself?
And how about errors? Say it is the evening following your wedding and she displays the “blue screen of death.” Do you reboot? Reinstall the operating system? Recalibrate her positronic brain interface (notice the Star Trek reference)?
I am definitely looking forward to the next Osaka fashion presentation when her male counterpart probably makes his grand entrance. Whether his name will be Data or Ken, it remains to be seen. Until then, I'll leave you with the Japanese Barbie.
