The future of digital entertainment content delivery is still a pretty blurry one since nobody really knows for sure whether the Internet will outpace Blu-ray discs or the other way around. However, digital downloads seem to gain more and more market share, with several set-top boxes designed especially for “translating” the Internet streaming to TV appearing on the market over the recent two years.
By implementing advanced compression technology and codecs into its products, Roku will be able to deliver, starting from now, instant streaming of HD content from Netflix over normal broadband Internet connections, which will turn high-definition into a concept available for a lot more people.
For Roku, this is a pretty important move. As Anthony Wood, founder & CEO of Roku states, “Netflix is a pioneer in streaming HD content over the Internet and the results are impressive. Adding hundreds of HD titles to their catalog of more than 12,000 streaming titles provides tremendous value to Roku owners.”
The possibility of viewing HD content via Roku will be materialized in the form of a software update, which all Roku players out there will undergo over the next couple of weeks. Furthermore, all of the new units to arrive on the market will be able to play high-definition video right out of the box, without any serious price increase (the boxes will sell for 100 dollars, exactly as they did before).
As many of you certainly know, Netflix is one of the most important names in digital content delivery, featuring hundreds of titles in HD format and a few thousand movies at DVD-grade quality. Furthermore, it's the first major content provider to approach Roku for distribution purposes, but, on the other hand, Roku is Netflix's first partner, because the company approached other set-top box manufacturers in the past (like Samsung and TiVo).
