If you are a master at solving Rubik's cube, then the introduction of Rubik's 360 is definitely a bar raised for you. One of the world's most known toy has gotten an upgrade, to integrate in the 21st century context.
Rubik’s 360 is set to repeat the success of the maddening Cube, which became an overnight sensation almost three decades ago and remains the world’s fastest-selling toy. Now, the reclusive Hungarian inventor hopes to recreate the buzz of Rubik’s Cube with his new game, featuring six balls trapped within three transparent plastic spheres.
The puzzle confronts users with the same frustrating challenge – a task that is simple to understand, with only one possible solution, yet extremely difficult to execute. Players must get the colored balls from an inner sphere into matching slots on the outer sphere by shaking them through a middle sphere that has only two holes.
“I feel that the 360 is one of the most innovative and exciting puzzles we’ve developed since the Cube – adopting elements of my original design, challenging the solver to use skill, dexterity and logic,” Erno Rubik said. The new toy will be unveiled at a Germany toy industry fair on February 5 and will be available for purchase starting with August this year.
Rubik's Cube was invented in 1974, but was not released until 1980 when it became a phenomenon. Sales have risen again in recent years with Internet tutorials helping revive interest. Fans of the original are eagerly awaiting the launch of the new puzzle. Ron van Bruchem, 41, the Dutch co-founder of the World Cube Association, said that “Our community is very interested in the upcoming release of Rubik 360.”
However, this is probably not the best news for the world's slowest solver, Graham Parker, aged 45, who finished his cube earlier this month, 26 years after he bought it, after having endured wrist problems, back pains and sleepless nights.
