What we have here is a boom box in the guise of an AT-AT Imperial Walker. Which is one of the coolest things this mortal has ever seen on this drab, drab planet. Usually, slapping a Star Wars design on a gadget means placing it dangerously close to the geek zone. Which can, more often than not, be a good thing in marketing terms. The problem here is that boom boxes aren't for geeks. They're for da cool people (the “da” was intentional, it actually means “the”, but I wanted to emphasize that... well.. that... you know – cool stuff, in the house, in the zone – boom box, right?). Ahem...

Anyway, combining Star Wars with boom boxes has an unexpectedly nice result. It is geeky, but is cool geekiness – a subtle nuance that one doesn't see too often these days. Unfortunately, these photos are all the Internet knows about the AT-AT boom box for now. No info on availability, price or exact features. Although you don't need RD-2D's sensors to see that it comes with at least some speakers, radio antennas and tape deck.

As for boom boxes in general, one might think they would have become obsolete, now that we have a slew of portable devices such as the iPod. Indeed, as standard portable audio players, boom boxes are no longer viable. Nowadays, people treat them as curiosities, they no longer have a practical use, they're only there to project that retro cool image. Like pants with wide lower edges, or whatever they're called.

Sure, true blue Star Wars fans might complain that the walkers were actually white. To give them an equally geeky reply, I would say that Vader painted them white because he used them to invade that wintry planet where the rebels were celebrating Christmas and stuff. It was camouflage color. I don't think any would-be user of this AT-AT boom box plans to invade Hots in the near future, so black's OK.

We are just a few, but there are many of you, Softpedia users, out there.
