Galaxy Tab arrives in the US

After its triumphant release at IFA, just about everyone was expecting Samsung's Galaxy Tab internet and multimedia tablet to arrive in the US as well, thus taking on the iPad right on its home turf, and sure enough, the Korean company has just announced the launch of the Tab in the US market and the partnerships with the country's most important carriers.

So, in the near future, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless will all be offering the new tablet, which provides roughly the same set of features announced initially, with a couple of minor differences (some good, others rather bad).

So, the Galaxy Tab features the same 7-inch enhanced TFT display screen, 1GHz Hummingbird Application processor supporting 3D graphics and smooth Web browsing and front and rear-facing cameras for video chat while on-the-go.

Furthermore, it is powered by the Google Android 2.2 operating system, including full support for Adobe Flash Player 10.1.

An interesting addition, compared to the version presented at IFA, is the Samsung Media Hub, Samsung’s own content service, offering a vast lineup of films and TV programs for rent or purchase.

Samsung is working with the biggest and best names in entertainment, including MTV Networks, NBC Universal and Paramount to assemble a robust library of movies and TV programming, including new release films, next day TV episodes and even full TV show seasons.

Media Hub also allows the user to expand the entertainment experience, allowing content purchased to permanently own to be shared with up to five devices that carry the Media Hub application.

However, it seems that the various limitations imposed by US carriers have had quite an adverse effect on the tablet's overall functionality, the most significant loss being represented, according to Engadget, by Samsung Tab's voice-calling capabilities (achieved via a Bluetooth headset in the European version), which are nowhere to be found in the US-bound one.

Another thing worth mentioning is that the Tab will be limited to 3G in the US, despite of the existence of fully-working and much faster 4G networks.

Plus, it seems that, in order to really match Apple and its iPad in just about every possible way, Samsung is also working on a Wi-Fi only version, which will be available at a much lower price point and, most likely, without involving a contract with various carriers.

Last, but certainly not least, we'll have to mention that pricing details are yet unknown, but from the looks of things, they'll also involve some pretty high-price pre-requisite data carrier subscriptions.
