Samsung has proved once again its value in the field of electronic devices, with its Pebble MP3 player, officially launched in June 2008. This leader of consumer electronics innovation and design answered the fashionistas' expectations by creating a first-class, fashion-forward, portable device, such as the S2 “Pebble” MP3 Player.

Design

She says: Sticking to the fashion trends this year, Samsung has captured the color palette en vogue, as well as the soft design lines that will make people go crazy about its products, while sticking to its long-tradition of offering consumers top-notch audio quality.

Available in a variety of colors, the S2 Pebble is more than just a media player offering on-the-go entertainment, it is a true fashion accessory that can be used to accentuate someone's personal style. It has been developed with a comfortable and ergonomic form factor at its core, to ensure that not only does it fit into a hand or a pocket, but it is also easy to use.

The Pebble comes in black, white, red, green and purple and it looks very stylish, but also cute, at the same time, taking the shape of a rounded polished stone.

He says: Most MP3 players these days try to show off all kinds of features and fancy x-inch displays, trying in the end to become something more than they are meant to be: simple portable audio players. It is nice to see a company like Samsung using a simple concept to design an extremely..... normal MP3 player.

The whole pebble look seems to please fashionistas and casual users alike. Available in a wide palette of colors (black, red, purple, etc.), I believe it is exactly the color of the device that will distinguish between fashion groupies and tech enthusiasts.

While the lack of an LCD might stray people from appreciating it, I think a display would ruin the simple design. Elegance is somewhat restricted by the bottom edge led, which I think is more of a no-go if fashion is your thing.

Features

She says: The Pebble features Samsung's proprietary sound technology, Digital Natural Sound 2.0 (DNSe), which provides high-quality acoustics, optimized for playback through the included earphones.

Offering MP3, WMA and OGG playback compliance, it also includes support for a mobile playlist and the 1GB internal flash memory provides enough storage space for approximately 16 hours of audio. However, if that's not enough for you, Samsung has also promised to release a 2GB version of the player very soon, so that you can enjoy even more of your favorite tunes on the go.

He says: As far as features go, I am a big fan of simplicity and for this reason I really admire the Samsung S2. I myself have a plain USB stick MP3 player and I've never been amazed by fancy iPod-like audio players. The device supports the most common audio formats out there: mp3, wma and ogg; this is more than most of us will ever need. The Samsung DNSe technology sounds a lot more promising than any high tech equalizer that expensive players advertise. Of course, some picky users would appreciate more control over the sound quality, but I know that when I'm out jogging or at the gym (yes, not all us IT writers are nerds) I don't want to be bothered by sensitive controls and stuff. I want to keep things simple.

As far as storage goes, my current MP3 player is also at the 1GB margin and I'm rarely forced to clean up tracks from it. I usually manage the tracks once every 6 months, so 1GB is fine for me. Considering that Samsung also promises a 2GB alternative, the S2 seems even more attractive.

It would of course be interesting to see a Pebble with an FM radio. Something like this would take Samsung to the top since some people grow tired of their tunes and like to try something new at times.

Performance

She says: The Pebble offers you a continuous playback for up to 13 hours on a single charge, thanks to its rechargeable Li-Polymer battery. With this player, you are guaranteed not only to listen to your favorite music with profound acoustic clarity, but also to stay in style while doing so. Its reduced size (1.66x1.62x0.65 inches) makes it perfect to take along, no matter the location. Compact, elegant and efficient, what more do you want?

She says: The reduced size is clearly a plus for the Pebble. I like my gadgets small. You might think that a decent mobile phone can do the work of 5 gadgets put together, but I don't like things that do more than they are supposed to. The Pebble can run for 13 hours continuously with crystal clear sound and with it's small form factor, most will forget the music is coming somewhere from within their pockets.

User friendly

She says: Controls are entirely placed on the rear side of the Pebble, including play/pause, volume, playback options (standard, random, repeat), and DNSe 2.0 audio enhancements for a straightforward interface that is easy to navigate even without seeing the buttons. A hidden LED along the bottom edge will flash numerous colors and patterns, concurring with the selected playback mode and EQ setting.

He says: Are you kidding me? What could be more simple than using the 5 basic Pebble controls? It's so user-friendly that even an ape could use it. The control scheme has the forward, backward and volume control keys set in a cross with the play/pause key in the center. What I love the most about this idea is that you don't even have to look at it when you control the tracks. You don't even need to take out of your pocket since you can feel the controls through your clothes.

Value for money

She says: The S2 player from Samsung sells for approximately 40 US dollars in various web deals, a sum which is definitely worth paying for such a cute and classy player, which will render your music in high-quality sound.

He says: For $40 the S2 packs everything an audio player needs. I should even say the device comes with the ONLY features an MP3 player should ever have. More features would mean more money for something else than an audio player.

Cool factor

She says: MP3 players pop up like mushrooms, most of them trying to attract through their design rather than their features. The Pebble is an exception though, because it comes with great features for a rather classic MP3player, so its design is not a way to impress, but rather a bonus. The round, pebble-like shape makes it adorable, for both men and women. Of course, men might want to stay away from the purple version, and the red maybe, if they don't want to raise any suspicions on them. A great looking MP3 player, with nice capabilities-that's what's going to keep the Pebble alive.

He says: No doubt the Pebble is cool. Sleek, shiny looks are always impressive, but I fear that these days iPods are becoming cooler and cooler just by use of aggressive marketing. Poor little Pebble is fighting a loosing battle. I also like the round shape of the S2. Samsung clearly put some thought in it when it came to color schemes. Each of the 5 themes has it's own personality and shows of good taste when it comes to style and fashion.

I just got a pebble and so far it's really really awesome. It holds a lot of songs and it's so tiny it's perfect.
