Generally, when we think about short-throw projectors, the first thing that comes to mind is the image of an ultra-portable device that can be moved between various locations quite easily and provide very good projection features even if the distance from the projection surface is a relatively small one. However, it seems that the engineers over at Sanyo have a fairly different idea, since their HD-capable short-throw projector is anything but portable.
Hence, the company (or at least, its Japanese branch) has recently demonstrated such a device that allows users to enjoy a very good quality image regardless of where the projector is placed in the room. However, there's one catch: for the time being, this prototype projector is pretty much the size of a small table (93.3 x 20 x 24.8 inches).
The Sanyo projector can generate an image with a diagonal size of up to 100 inches from a distance of just 23.6 inches away, which translates into a throw ratio of just 0.28. Furthermore, the displayed video feed is Full HD, which means that the images have 1080p resolution and a 16:9 aspect ratio.
Apparently, the projector's optical system consists of an ultra-short focus lens group and a concave mirror, as well as a three-panel DLP system embedded in the TV stand-like enclosure, with the brightness level being rated at around 7,000 ANSI lumens (which, without a doubt, is among the world's highest).
Of course, since we are only talking about a prototype for the time being, there's really no information on whether this thing will make it to the market or whether it will become a series product after all. However, if it does make it to the production lines, we certainly hope that the guys over at Sanyo will do something about that size, which is certainly not that feasible, at least in real-life situations.
