I don't know if you have noticed but companies have started making
increasingly thinner laptops. While this is definitely an endeavor worthy of praise, thinner laptops also mean using less impressive but quite slim hardware, giving up function in order to suit a user's desire for form. Seeing how the trend will most likely continue,
Seagate has recently unveiled what it deems to be the world's thinnest 2.5-inch hard disk drive for slim laptop computers.
The device will fit any high-end netbook, ultra-portable and entry-level laptop, backup device or general consumer electronic. It is just 7mm high and about 25 percent slimmer than regular 9.5mm 2.5-inch laptop hard drives. The Momentus Thin drive comes in two sizes: either a 250GB or 160GB product is at your disposal to do with as you please. It also has a cache of 8MB, as well as a SATA (Serial ATA) 3Gb/second interface and a spin speed of 5,400 rotations per minute.
“The Momentus Thin drive promises to help computer makers differentiate on mobile-computing form factor and better compete in the fast-growing markets for thin laptop PCs and netbooks,” said Dave Mosley, executive vice president of Sales, Marketing and Product Line Management at Seagate. “Seagate is committed to helping its OEM and system integrator partners meet market demand for thinner laptop PCs and plans to expand storage capabilities for thin laptops as demand for these slimmer models continues to grow.”
This new hard drive is part of the Momentus family of HDDs offering users a range of products to fit their needs. Curious when all this “thin computing” trend ends? So am I, considering it is definitely in full spin.
