Though Seiko has been working with E-Ink displays since 2005, when they unveiled their first watch with such a display at the Baselworld show that year, the EPD or E-Ink technology has not been taken seriously. It became more popular in our times thanks to the e-Books that keep showing up. Seiko has not forgotten about what they started back then and they are now bringing up front their new EPD watch with an active matrix system.
The active matrix is an improvement added to this type of displays, which allows them to show diverse imagery, while maintaining the legibility and low-power consumption properties. This new E-Ink display seen on Seiko's watch has 80,000 pixels (300dpi) and four grey levels.
For the moment, it is capable of displaying the time, date and world-clock. The last information can be seen on a nice, pretty large, photo of our planet. You can watch the video I got from E-ink-info for more accurate details. After the first three minutes of the clip, you will be able to see these new E-Ink watches from Seiko in action.
Seiko likes to brag about these new watches, as they are the only company manufacturing them now and also the only working with Active Matrix EPD technology. They are somewhat right when they predict these will be “the future of watchmaking,” as this new type of display performs much better than an LCD one. This is all from the graphics’ point of view.
If we look at the power consumption, these fresh Seiko watches will impress you even further, as their producers say that they have been reduced to 1/100th of the power needed to operate a regular E-book display. So, more economic than the larger e-paper displays as well. EDP tech is still in development, which means that you'll have to wait a little before they appear on the market.
