As we've been able to see for the past couple of years, motion-sensing components (such as gyroscopes and accelerometers) are starting to make their way into more and more portable devices, since they enabled quite a large array of applications (just look at the iPhone and the numerous apps that make use of the built-in accelerometer). However, the level of sensitivity most of these chips can deliver is not exactly “professional,” and for this reason, French company Sensaris has just introduced the MoveIt Senspod, a 6-axis wireless wearable motion sensor that communicates to a computer or mobile phone via a Bluetooth module.

According to the manufacturer, its sensor is one of the smallest commercially available wireless units packed with high sampling rate 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope and GPS. Hence, its near credit card size and lightweight enable a wide spectrum of daily life uses as it leaves complete freedom of movement while simultaneously measuring speed, acceleration, rotation, twist, distance and position.

Apparently, due to its very small size and portability, this particular solution can be easily employed in a wide variety of situations, such as optimizing one's sports performance, exploring augmented reality (increasingly popular nowadays, and sure to skyrocket in the future), and a lot more.

Moreover, the provided API and platform independent SDK deliver a friendly solution for programmers to develop specific consumer applications, while the interface of choice (Bluetooth) seriously enhances its level of versatility, allowing the sensor to connect to practically any other device equipped with such a module.

"Our customers have been telling us for several years that they were looking for comfortable, easy and fun ways to enhance their experience,” say the company's reps. ”The combination of the MoveIt Senspod with our SensNet real time communication platform opens up exciting sensor uses not only in gaming, sports or fitness but also in high growth segments such as gesture recognition or ambient assisted living."
