It's becoming clear that flash-based solutions represent the future of portable storage, but we might not necessarily be talking about flash drives here, but about something more complex, namely solid state drives, or SSDs. And that's because the Silicon Power company has just brought to the market a very interesting product of this type, namely a 64GB SSD that features both eSATA and USB interfaces.
As you probably know only too well, eSATA interfaces are becoming more and more popular, due mostly to the fact that they provide some pretty huge data transfer rates, at least by comparison with the older USB connectors. However, they also have their shortcomings, one of the most important being the fact that they require their own power connectors in order to operate.
For this reason, Silicon Power has decided to equip its new line of SSDs (the largest of which attains a storage capacity of 64GB) with two different connectors, namely an eSATA interface and a miniUSB connector.
The eSATA connection has a read speed of 90 MB/s and a write speed of 42MB/s, which is eight times the write speed of the normal USB. The eSATA connector provides external data transfer at speeds up to 3Gbps, which is higher than USB 2.0 interface with 480MB/s. The miniUSB connector offers a read speed of 30MB/s and a write speed of 25MB/s.
Additionally, the 64GB eSATA/USB SSD features an integrated ECC (Error Correction Code) to ensure an accurate data transfer, as well as built-in wear leveling technology that guarantees long-term reliability and ultra-long storage lifespan.
Unfortunately, pricing and availability details regarding the new SSDs are still unknown, but we hope that the company will provide this data in the near future as well.
